Gulong Town — The Renowned Origin of Big Red Star Anise
Gulong Town is situated in the northeast of Teng County, Guangxi. It features long summers, short winters, a well-developed water system, and abundant sloped land — an ideal environment for growing star anise, which thrives in mild winters and cool summers.
Star anise cultivation in Gulong dates back more than 120 years. As a traditional pillar industry of the town, Gulong Big Red Star Anise is renowned for its large fruit size, bright red color, thick flesh, high oil content, intense aroma, and clean dryness. Global spice buyers widely know it as “Big Red Star Anise.”
The town has over 190,000 mu of star anise plantations, with an annual output of about 112,500 tons of fresh star anise fruit. More than 85% of China’s star anise is produced in Guangxi, and 11% comes from Gulong Town — meaning roughly one out of every 10 star anise fruits in China is grown here.
In 2020, Teng County exported 6,125 tons of star anise, representing a 7.5% year-on-year increase. Gulong star anise accounted for 90% of these exports, with products mainly shipped to the Middle East, Southeast Asia, Japan, South Korea, the European Union, and other global markets.
